Beautiful Freaks S11E03: January Music Round-Up

Our January Music Round-Up features the best new indie music released in January! We’ve got a handful of great new singles including new tracks by Atlanta’s Flamingo Shadow, London’s Night Flowers and Hamburg’s Krakow Loves Adana, as well as a brief discussion of four albums released this month. The Green Child, who have released their epynomous album via Upset the Rhythm, provide us with mellow, layered synth-music that is less simple than it may sound. Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS?, on the other hand, are excessive in all their aspects, from the incredible and incredulous band name to the energy of their music. Perhaps this can get too much for the duration of an album, but the Pink Floyd-inspired track ‘Sheep’ is worth a play. HJESTJFAVHS are from Finland, and entirely coincidentally the next two bands also hail from Scandinavia. Iceland’s Dream Wife‘s debut has been anticipated for a long time, and it definitely lives up to the expectations – it’s early 2000s post-punk redux, and outspokenly feminist instead of slightly blokey. 2018 will undoubtedly be their year. ShitKid has less immediate popular appeal, but her EP This Is It is a special one, providing that kind of real feeling that’s also evident in Porridge Radio’s music. We hope an album will follow up this EP soon.

That’s it for this week; next Tuesday we’ll be back with an interview with Oxford-based psychedelic pop band The Relationships! Tune in at 8pm via Oxide Radio for that.
